    Intel Foundry Prepares for 20A “2nm” Chip Mass Production in 2024

    In a significant development, Intel Foundry Services, the in-house semiconductor foundry of Intel, has announced that its 2 nm-class Intel 20A and 1.8 nm-class Intel 18A foundry nodes have completed their development phase. This paves the way for mass production of chips in these nodes, marking a major milestone in Intel’s roadmap.

    The Intel 20A node, equivalent to 2nm, is expected to begin mass production in the first half of 202412. This will be followed by the Intel 18A node, equivalent to 1.8nm, which is slated to start production in the second half of the same year. The completion of the development phase signifies that Intel has finalized the specifications, performance, and power targets of the nodes.

    Let’s review the basics of Intel’s 20A node, which is poised to transform the semiconductor industry and IFS’s portfolio. New RibbonFET transistors, which will supersede the current FinFET architecture and bring new interconnect innovations—such as PowerVia—are anticipated to be included in the 20A node. The 20A process node will be utilized by Arrow Lake, one of the largest product families, and we may anticipate a few third-party clients utilizing this node via IFS.

    Intel’s ambitious plans signal its intent to challenge the dominance of Samsung and TSMC in the chip manufacturing sector. The company’s roadmap until 2025 indicates a commitment to achieving “process leadership” by offering the highest performance per watt.

    Though Intel Foundry hasn’t had much success in the industry recently with its semiconductor, things appear to be changing, especially with how the markets are changing with the introduction of AI. The possible addition of Intel Foundry to Team Green’s network of foundry partners presents an intriguing opportunity, as the CFO of NVIDIA has indicated that the company still needs a foundry.

    Intel’s roadmap also includes the transition to Intel 7 and Intel 4, with Intel 3, 20A, and 18A nodes coming in the next few years. The 20A node will debut with Arrow Lake and the company’s first usage of PowerVia and RibbonFET, while the 18A node will also utilize PowerVia and RibbonFET.
