    Direct-to-Mobile D2M Technology: Overcoming Adoption Hurdles

    Direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology is a revolutionary concept that has the potential to transform the way we consume content. This technology allows multimedia content, including live TV matches, to be streamed directly to phones without using the internet.

    However, the adoption of this technology faces several hurdles, which we will be discussing below.

    D2M technology operates on a principle similar to FM radio. In an FM radio, the receiver within the device taps into different radio frequencies to capture and play the radio signals. Similarly, D2M technology uses a receiver within the mobile device to capture digital TV signals.

    However, D2M technology goes a step further by combining the principles of broadband and broadcast technologies. Here’s how it works:

    • Broadcast: In the context of D2M, broadcasting refers to transmitting digital TV signals over a specific geographic area. These signals are sent out from a central location and can be captured by any device equipped with a suitable receiver within that area.
    • Broadband: Broadband technology allows for high-speed data transmission across a wide band of frequencies. In the case of D2M, broadband technology is used to enhance the quality of the received signals and to allow for a greater variety of content to be transmitted.

    By combining these two technologies, D2M allows mobile phones to directly receive digital TV signals over a specific geographic area. This eliminates the need for an internet connection to stream this content, potentially reducing data costs and improving accessibility.

    The potential applications of D2M technology are vast, ranging from streaming live TV matches to delivering educational content and emergency alerts. However, the adoption and implementation of this technology present several challenges, including the need for a new nationwide network for indoor coverage, higher costs for smartphone makers, and potential opposition from telecom operators.

    Despite its potential, the adoption of D2M technology faces several challenges. Telecom operators may oppose the proposal as it could impact their data revenue and business plans. Telecom operators are likely to strongly oppose the proposal as it will eat into their data revenue, most of which comes from video consumption, and hurt their 5G business case.

    The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) has flagged challenges that could crop up in the implementation of the D2M technology. The integration of smartphones that support D2M and digital terrestrial TV to mobile devices (DTT2M) technologies remains a big challenge.

    In its second version of the technical report on the subject “direct broadcasting to mobile handheld devices”, TEC has pointed out that the implementation of D2M technology such as Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, also known as NextGen TV, might require a new nationwide network for indoor coverage for quality services, which would be complex.

    The implementation would involve higher costs for smartphone makers and would increase the pricing of phones, some stakeholders said in their responses to a consultation on the subject.

    The DoT body also flagged challenges regarding the availability of the handset ecosystem, scalability of D2M technology, business viability and opportunities, and spectrum requirements.

    With over 800 million mobile users in the country, the Indian Government aims to harness this technology for content delivery, especially for education purposes and emergency alerts. The government is exploring the potential of D2M in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur.

    The Indian government, in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur, is working on the details of D2M technology. A meeting on the issue is planned for next week, which is likely to be attended by officials from DoT, MIB, IIT-Kanpur as well as representatives from the telecom and broadcast industry.
