SMITE 2: Next-Gen Action MOBA Powered by Unreal Engine 5.2

    Hi-Rez Studios has recently announced the development of SMITE 2, the sequel to their popular free-to-play action MOBA game. This new game is being hailed as a true sequel that aims to be the next-generation action MOBA.

    SMITE 2 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5.2, and there are plans to upgrade soon to Unreal Engine 5.3. The new engine will allow for dynamic lighting, physically based rendering, cloth simulation, and more detailed models. The goal is to take the core of SMITE and make it better, more streamlined yet deeper at the same time on the gameplay level.

    The developers are targeting improvements in specific areas to accomplish this. The Relic and Item systems have been fully overhauled to open up greater experimentation potential. The items in the inventory can potentially have an active effect (like Blink) beyond just passive improvements. Gods are also no longer magic or physical; each god can specialize in Strength or Intelligence, offering various playstyles.

    The abilities of the gods, the playable characters in this mythological MOBA, will be more impactful and spectacular. For example, Ymir’s wall now knocks up enemies and can be used to rocket jump. Anubis will have new, smoother animations. And there are brand new gods as well, such as Hecate, the Greek goddess of sorcery. She has been the number one request from the community for many years and will finally be playable in SMITE 2, bringing a ranged playstyle with her magic abilities.

    Ymir: In SMITE 2, Ymir’s abilities have been enhanced. His wall now has physics-based powers that can knock up enemies and can be used to rocket jump. This adds a new level of strategy and mobility to his gameplay.

    Anubis: Anubis, known for his rapid single-target damage, will have smoother animations in SMITE 2. His abilities will be more impactful, making him feel more like a god performing godly actions. Anubis’ abilities in SMITE 1 steal Physical and Magical Protection from the target and increase his Healing obtained from Magical Lifesteal. These effects stack up on every tick of Anubis’ abilities. It will be interesting to see how these abilities evolve in SMITE.

    Hecate: Hecate, the Greek goddess of sorcery, is a new addition to the roster of gods in SMITE 2. She brings an elegant playstyle with her ranged magical abilities. Hecate’s magic allows her to reach through dimensions and even travel within the liminal space. This could potentially give her great mobility on the map, adding a unique dynamic to the gameplay.

    In SMITE 2, the game eliminates the restrictions of Gods using either Physical or Magical Power, allowing all Gods to build all items, and scaling individual abilities based on new Strength and Intelligence stats5. This could lead to more diverse and strategic gameplay.

    A custom matchmaking system will power the new game, which will support cross-play between PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. Fans can also expect an improved user interface (UI), including a refined Item Store, and updated audio.

    Hi-Rez clarified its plans to support both SMITE and SMITE 2 at the same time, so there’s no danger for those players who will prefer to stick with the original. Moreover, a Divine Legacy program has been introduced to reward players for all their time and accomplishments in SMITE and will also honor their spending.

    With the Closed Alpha set to begin in Spring 2024, SMITE 2 promises to bring a new level of depth and immersion to the MOBA genre. It’s an exciting time for fans of the franchise and the genre as a whole.
