Obsidian’s Proposals for an Elder Scrolls spin-off were reportedly rejected by Bethesda

Obsidian Entertainment, known for creating critically acclaimed RPGs such as Fallout: New Vegas, reportedly proposed several spin-off ideas for The Elder Scrolls in Bethesda. These proposals were, unfortunately, turned down. The news comes from Chris Avellone, the veteran game designer who worked as Chief Creative Officer and writer on Fallout: New Vegas.

In the world of video games, few franchises have as much clout and fan following as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. These series, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, have defined the role-playing game (RPG) genre for many gamers. However, a recent revelation has left fans of these franchises in shock.

Co-founder and former chief creative officer Chris Avellone recently revealed on Twitter that Bethesda rejected multiple proposals from them to develop more Fallout games as well as The Elder Scrolls spin-offs. The news has left many fans wondering what could have been.

Avellone did not provide specific details about the proposals, but the fact that they were rejected suggests that Bethesda had other plans for their franchises. It’s also possible that Bethesda wanted to maintain control over the direction of the series.

The rejection of Obsidian’s proposals has undoubtedly had an impact on both studios. For them, it meant missing out on the opportunity to work on one of the biggest franchises in gaming. For Bethesda, it meant potentially missing out on innovative ideas that could have taken their series in new and exciting directions.

Avellone has not provided an explanation for the proposal’s rejection, and since Bethesda typically keeps this information internal, we probably won’t find out. Avellone elaborated further, saying he wanted a system along the lines of what Call of Duty had with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and eventually Sledgehammer Games. Though he thought that working with Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment would appear to be a “less rushed” approach, the pitch failed to gain much traction. The likelihood of the idea being implemented now is even lower because of The Elder Scrolls Online, which makes the idea even less appealing in terms of bridging the gap between new Bethesda installments (like the upcoming The Elder Scrolls VI, which is currently in early development).

Despite this setback, both studios have continued to produce high-quality games. Obsidian recently released The Outer Worlds, a new RPG that has been well-received by fans and critics alike. Bethesda, on the other hand, is currently working on The Elder Scrolls VI, the next installment in their popular series.

While it’s disappointing to think about the Elder Scrolls spin-offs that could have been, it’s also exciting to think about what these talented studios will come up with next. As always, the world of video games is full of surprises, and who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll see an Elder Scrolls game developed by Obsidian. Only time will tell.
